family

I mean that in every sense of the word. Family. Its much, much bigger than mom-dad-sister-brother. Its the relationships that surround us and encourage us. Mold us into who we are. Form our idiosyncrasies and even our passions.
Last night I had a ball of a time with some beautiful women in my life. One of them is recently engaged- hurrah!- and we all went out to celebrate. I literally lost track of time. What I intended to be an hour turned into two, and I had not even finished my first drink before I needed to run out the door. Family. Encouraging, freeing, fun family.
This weekend my brother ran a marathon. Hoards of us scattered about the streets of New York City to cheer. Friends from high school, friends of friends, aunts, uncles and cousins. We were all over the place, and we each took it as our sole responsibility to be at this place, at this time to cheer on our man. Family, my friends. Family.
Here's the clincher: my brother had a disappointing race and he admitted he wouldn't have bothered finishing if it hadn't been for FAMILY. He knew what his time was going to be. He knew it wasn't going to achieve for him what he wanted. But he ran his race to the finish because of the support of his family. We gave him what he needed to run the race ahead of him.
So much meat there. So gorgeous a statement from that brother of mine. Family it up, whenever you can. My gosh, I have so many races to finish- we need each other.
