The thing is, Sarah and I didn't really intend to be friends. Its not that we avoided it or disliked each other, but we didn't seek each other out either. We ended up living together because Sarah was friends with someone I was friends with. Those two in-between friends flaked out of the apartment and we ended up sharing a fridge without them. Then we ended up dating guys who were living together too. More overlapping time spent. Then we were with each other for the break ups with both those guys. That's when it got real. The friendship that is. At that point, we were in. Tied. On the same team. She drew a MS Paint drawing of me and I realized she was a different sort of friend. Someone who commits and digs in and doesn't flake out. Someone who I could drink wine with and eat an entire block of cheese with in one sitting, without noticing that it was past my bedtime.
We have things in common, of course. More things now that our lives have continued to overlap for five years. More than that though, we've got time.
I'm glad friendship is different than I thought it was. I like this version.
