Today is the first day of school for most kids in our area. Last night Jake and I were reading some before-bed poetry aloud. The last line of the Billy Collins poem First Reader claims "we were forgetting how to look, learning how to read." I can't help but think that in all our educating, we often forget to encourage seeking, exploring and questioning. The older I get and the more classes I take, the more I realize how very little I know and how few things I am sure of. I don't want to "forget how to look."
Something that helps me maintain a looking spirit? Spending time with the kiddos. Katie and Artie ran their first ever race this weekend- the same day their mama (my older sister) ran her first ever race too. It was a family affair.
The kids were full to squealing of excitement to cheer on their mama. She was running a 7K and they were so thrilled to see her come around the last corner that they jumped in and ran the final sprint with her. Then came their own race- a 100 meter dash for ages 2-4. Man oh man- the sheer joy.
Artie: "MY FIRST RACE! HERE I COME!"
Katie: "I have so many thinks to think about this."
Artie: "We got this sis- these hoodlums don't stand a chance. I've got my swoosh shirt on."
Artie: "SEE? I told ya'! WINNERS!" / Katie: "I think I will include this experience in my memoir."
I hope you had a restful Labor Day and are ready for September. I don't feel quite ready, but I am prepared to hold on and keep up. My second year of grad school starts tomorrow- second to last semester! I'm going to keep Artie's optimism and Katie's thoughtful looking on my mind. Happy Tuesday.
