taking stock // 7

making: Toast? Not much these days. I did cook up stuffed eggplant (with feta!) last week and a batch of carrot top pesto earlier this week. Oh, and last weekend I made chicken kabob salads for dinner with friends. I guess I have been making more than I've been feeling like making!

drinking: Ginger pear ice tea with hunks of lemon for good measure. I brewed it up on Monday (or Tuesday?) and it has lasted all week.

reading: Small Wonder (Barbara Kingsolver). It's no Poisonwood Bible, but short essays are easy to pick up and put down for days, without any loss in between. Perfect for tired eyes not quite up to reading every night.

wanting: This ukulele- it seems like a simple, fun instrument to our little string collection. Also, a new yoga mat

watching: Jake and our friend Pete pick hops in the yard for hours upon hours. So. Much. Hops.

listening: Cicadas and bees are taking over our yard and I couldn't be happier.

eating: All I want it mashed potatoes (skins included, please). Comfort food for cool nights?

smelling: Camp fire. We had our last backyard fire of August on Monday and even though the mosquitos were too aggressive to enjoy it for long, I was still happy for the lingering smell of fire on my clothes.

wishing: That the dogs would magically train themselves to go to the bathroom in the woods instead of the yard. I keep saying I'M going to train them and I keep not doing it...so, magic, please?

enjoying: Our antiquated (and uglyuglyugly) washer finally bit the dust this week, to which I responded "hooray! now we can buy a new, pretty one!" That washer didn't owe us anything and I was more than ready to lay it to rest. So, tired as dogs and with a ragamuffin toddler in tow, we trekked to Lowes on Wednesday night to peruse the selection. We didn't bother going down the rows with touch screens and fancy displays and instead b-lined it to the, ahem, affordable section and then, in short order, moved another row over to the marked down lot. There we found our new, slightly dented, HALF PRICE, appliance. It works, good as new, and I can take dents over rust any day. Many, many loads later, I can confidently say I am enjoying our mid-week investment.

loving: Alice has taken to holding her hand up at me- her silent signal for me to reach out my own. Walking hand in hand with my girl? Yes, please. Forever, please.

hoping: For family time. Last Sunday was Jake's first day off since mid-July. I can't even explain how much better my mood was after having just a day for the three of us together. Finally. So, here's hoping for more of that this weekend.

needing: For traffic to be minimal on Monday. Fingers crossed.

feeling: Tired from a kind of crazy week, but happy for a cool day and cool evenings and the coming of Fall. Leaves across the street have already started turning and I finally took our beach chairs out of the back of my car. Its almost time for crisp! Or cobbler? We'll see.

wearing: Slippers. RE: cool evenings.

bookmarking: I have a weakness for beautiful goods made mindfully. This company makes the sweetest, delicate baby items while employing marginalized women in India, providing a means for them to become self-sustaining. The bear and bunny hats? Be still my heart. That LOVESTRUCK baby blanket? You've got to be kidding me with the sweetness.
