Galentine's > Valentine's

Inspired by Leslie Knope and Kate Baer, I hosted a Galentine's Day party on Friday night. I looked up the meanings of everyone's names in advance and we each claimed an attribute, wearing them as name tags for the evening. My friends claimed words such as "beloved" and "sweet as honey." I claimed "truth-seeker" and wore it on my chest like a badge of honor. We made acrostic poems of our names, combining silliness with an honest attempt to speak openly of things we love about ourselves.

I believe that we create who we are with the stories we tell. Sadly, I also believe we most often weave negative narratives, enlisting self-deprecating humor to communicate honest distaste for who we are and the ways in which we live. To boot, we compare and contrast our lives against those near and far, and our defenses flair up in the form of judgement. Women, and dare I say mothers, are the worst at this. We are perhaps the most self-doubting and most judgmental of all.

But, we are valuable! We are strong! We don't need to judge and we don't need to hate! Burn the nice candles and eat the cake too! Or, in the case of Friday night, eat the crepes. Here is my current acrostic draft:

Knitted together for good
Innovative
Mindful
Bold
Eager
Resilient
Learning &
Yearning

It was a great party and the high point of an otherwise pretty anti-romantic weekend. Jake had to work all morning on Saturday and the majority of my Valentine's Day was spent nursing a sick babe. We went out for a date in the afternoon thanks to my sister being willing to hug Alice close for a couple hours, but I was too distracted to really enjoy it. We ate at Chipotle and returned home to our sad, sniffly girl. Then, we tag-teamed the night shift, cuddling Alice as her temperature spiked and finally broke around 3AM.

And now we are engulfed in snow again and my body is tired from shoveling for several hours.

Bah humbug to Valentine's. I'll take Galentine's, please and thank you.
