on reliability

Yesterday I met Kevin the tow truck driver. He told me about his doberman pinscher and how it is best friends with his little gray cat. Sure enough, I watched a video on his phone of them snuggling and playing together. It was almost too adorable to handle. I showed him pictures seeing-eye ponies, the only thing I could think of to match the adorable video. He laughed and told me about the girl who lives next door and has a pet goat who she taught to walk on a leash and do tricks. I can't top that. That is just too good.

Today I met Keith the tow truck driver. He told me about how his job isn't work, its service. He helps people, keeps them safe, and gets them off the road. I wanted to say "amen!" since he had just saved me from the side of the interstate. He also told me that if I get a new car it should be a 4-wheel drive or an all-wheel drive, preferably a RAV4 or a CRV. "They're good in the snow." I could've hugged him for being so fatherly and kind.

It took me a casual 5 hours to get to work today. First there was the hour tow truck ride back to the North Shore. My car had decided to call it quits promptly after I had driven 45 minutes away from home, gloating in the fact that my car was completely repaired (after the breakdown and tow from the day before). Keith dropped me and my overheated clunker at the repair shop. After laughing with the elderly car mechanic about my state of affairs, I walked to Enterprise to spend money I was reluctant to part with on something that would reliably tote me an hour back through Boston and to work. Shore to shining shore, twice in one day.

What I've learned:
- AAA is the best. It is worth every stinkin' penny.
- Tow truck drivers are generally rough around the edges and also very kind. They're willing to strike up a conversation and quick to laugh. They have strong opinions and like sharing them, and when you're broken down and stressed to the gills, the distraction and kindness is so very welcome.
- Rental cars are a lot nicer than my real-life cars. Maybe I should buy a rental car?
