We bashed leukemia. We kicked it and spit in its face, gave it a hug and then stomped on its toes. We cried. Yet, instead of angry, confused crying, these were tears in awe of the fight. Tears celebrating the strength of the community and the beauty of our friend. We bashed leukemia and then we bashed some more.
As my dear friend, the one we were celebrating and bashing for, wrote later that night "i am surrounded by beauty that i don't understand. i am filled with things i don't comprehend. i fill up, i spill over. i want to kiss the world on the mouth." True words my friend. Amen.
Can someone please make an illustration of "kiss the world on the mouth"? I want it tattooed on my body to remember all these things- the incredible capability of people bonded together, the sheer amount of butterflies in one's stomach when you know you're working for something so desperately good, the joy of standing up in the face of the fear and grief.
We raised over $15,000. Bekah will need more to pay rent and buy food and everything else that comes with living the day-to-day for the next year, but this is a helluva good start. If you haven't joined the National Bone Marrow Registry please do it. If you feel like giving a few bucks to a beautiful broad who has a long battle ahead please don't hesitate to hop over to our fundraising site. You want to read more of her creative, funny, honest thoughts? Go climb aboard her spaceship. The event may be done, the show struck and the auction items sold, but there is still more than can be done. There's always more.
Here's to bashing together for always.
