"beyond my direction"

I'm in the process of interviewing summer staff candidates. As you can imagine, some interviews are better than others. And some are WAY better. After the first question of an interview yesterday, I blatantly told the applicant that she is a perfect fit for our programming. Perfect. I am so excited.

Her interview was inspiring. If it hadn't been a phone interview, I think we could have just kept chatting for hours. In response to my asking of a time when she felt successful, she told a story of working with children on a Shakespeare production and seeing them suddenly "get it." "They went beyond my direction." Bah! That's it! That's the gorgeous, moving potential of our work!! That sometimes- not always, and certainly not daily, but sometimes- there is this *spark* and suddenly something happens that is so far beyond ourselves. It clicks and you see a kid transform and create something you could not have pulled out of them. They create something beyond your direction.

I love it. It makes our work so much larger than ourselves. It instigates this acknowledgment of the great potential within each of us. We are so much larger than we allow ourselves to be.

Be big today. Acknowledge the great potential you possess and find a new octave of your abilities. Be larger than yourself.

PS: Talk about potential- that painting is by my 4 year old niece. Isn't she incredible?
