beautiful grammy

We were in Vermont this weekend to spend time with Jake's Grammy. Upon our leaving, she immediately wrote us several letters- one to each of us individually, and two more to us as a couple. I read them aloud while Jake cooked dinner last night.
"I'm always asking the Lord to help me fulfill His purpose for my being here on earth. I don't know what it is. I feel so useless when I can't help others."

Grammy is 91 years old and her body has been failing. Just a month and a half ago she had a two strokes. Yet, she still seeks to fulfill her purpose every day. Still seeks to help others.

I'm directing A Christmas Carol right now. My favorite line in the play is said by the chained and repentent Marley. In response to Scrooge defending himself as a true "man of business," Marley exclaims "Would that Mankind have been my business!"

Grammy has made mankind her business. Supporting those around her with encouragement and prayer. Writing letters every day. Playing with and loving every child she meets- she "honks" their noses, and if they don't make a "beep" sound she tells them their bell is broken. In more of Grammy's words: "If you can't horse around a little bit you're lost!"
Purpose. Joy. Good humor. Yes, please to all of the above.
