midnight in paris

Last night husband and I went to the Cape Ann Community Cinema. I love this quirky, home-y place in downtown Gloucester. The cinema is upstairs, and the seats are a mishmash of couches and comfy chairs. Watching a movie here is like watching a movie in a friend's gigantic living room- all the comfort and cozy typically lacking from a "out-for-a-movie" night. They also sell and pop this stuff:

Have you had Little Lads Herbal Corn? Its a tasty snack- I mean, seriously tasty. I'd never had it before last night. Its vegan, made with non-GMO corn, and has a surprising combination of herbs (mmmm, dill).

Midnight in Paris was utterly enjoyable, and a classic Woody Allen film. It reminded me of Manhattan, but with sweeping shots of Paris replacing the NYC skyline. Owen Wilson, with his golden retriever puppy way about him, is sweet and endearingly pathetic. His dialogue is delivered in a perfectly Woody Allen way- those choppy, halting questions and self-depricating humor. I was not expecting the fantastical plot (Wilson's character traveling back to his idealized time in history every midnight), but his shocked bug-eyes kept me with him in the story. And the back-in-time characters? Well, he travels to the 1920s! The 1920s! F. Scott Fitzgerald, Hemmingway, Dali (a cameo played by Adrien Brody!), Picasso, T.S. Eliot- my oh my, what a time to be an American in Paris. My favorite character was Gertrude Stein, played by Kathy Bates. It made me want to read some of Stein's work, and learn more about this before-her-time woman, and her influence on the authors and artists of the day. Bates was absolutely perfect for the role. Another great performance by Michael Sheen too, as a particularly "pedantic gentleman."

Oh, and I've got to say that I'm also obsessing over the gorgeous Marion Cotillard. Does anyone else have such a lovely way of formulating their words? I could listen to Cotillard speak for hours. The only weakness of the movie (for me) was Rachel McAdams as Owen Wilson's fiance. Meh. But I won't say too much- you watch the movie and tell me what you think! :)

And now, of course, I want to go to Paris and walk in the rain. I've heard its a terribly romantic city.

  1. Everyone raves about Midnight in Paris! I must admit, though, that I have not been in a theater in over a year. I need to change this. :)
