I Don't Feel Like Dancin'

I’m sore from choreographing Seize the Day for 2 hours yesterday morning. By the end of the dance session our Theatre Intensive campers were beat too, but they were way proud of themselves. Sweaty and proud. One sequence elicited some “I can’t”s. I ignored their trepidation and trudged/jumped/danced ahead. In the end, none of them proved their “can’t,” and all of them applauded their achievement (we really did give ourselves a rousing ovation). I’m looking forward to working and re-working it for the rest of the week- seeing who thrives in the movement, or just has a ball with it- and then seeing them perform on Friday, especially because these kids are NOT dancers. They’re awkward teenage boys and gangly teenage girls. Some have a range of pre-school dance lessons behind them, but as one of them said “it wasn’t really ballet, it was mostly just skipping.”

I love teaching these kids- proving to these kids- that they are CAPABLE, even if its just to do something like a dance routine. They shouldn’t doubt their abilities- they’re far too young to be doing that already. Actually, I guess they are at the prime age to begin doubting- that overwhelming coming-of-age moment- which makes me even more thankful I have a chance to tell them they’re capable of anything... especially dancing if they feel so inclined.

Since we're on a dance-topic today, here's a little treat. In my un-choreographed dance sessions, this is a personal favorite:

  1. Phew. Sounds like some hard work. Hard but fun:-) Haha. I'm still an awkward/gangly person...but I'll always try and dance! xoxo
